Burnable vs. non-burnable: How to properly separate your trash? | もえるごみ と もえないごみ：ごみのわけかた
1. Why separating garbage is important | ごみのルールをまもることはとてもたいせつです
In Japan, garbage must be separated into categories. If you don’t follow the rules, your garbage may not be collected. It may also disturb your neighbours.
日本（にほん）では、ごみをきちんとわけてださなければいけません。ルールをまもらないと、ごみは回収（かいしゅう）されません。そして、ちかくの人（ひと）に迷惑（めいわく）になります。
2. Main Categories of Garbage | ごみの しゅるい
In Shin-Okubo, garbage is usually separated into:
1. Burnable (可燃ごみ, kanengomi): Food, paper, clothes, small plastics
2. Non-burnable (不燃ごみ, funengomi): Glass, metal, spray cans
3. Recyclables (資源ごみ, shigengomi): PET bottles, cans, newspapers
4.Oversized (粗大ごみ, sodaigomi) : Furniture, bicycle
新大久保では、ごみは ４つのしゅるいに わけます：
1. もえるごみ（可燃ごみ・かねんごみ）
たとえば：たべもの、紙（かみ）、服（ふく）、ちいさいプラスチック など
2. もえないごみ（不燃ごみ・ふねんごみ）
たとえば：ガラス、金属（きんぞく）、スプレーかん など

3. How to separate garbage ごみのわけかた
3.1 Burnable/Combustible Garbage 可燃ごみ
These are items that can be incinerated and are usually collected twice a week. They must be placed in official burnable garbage bags and tied securely.
これらはもやすことができるごみで、通常は週に２回、回収（かいしゅう）されます。せいしきな ごみぶくろ（赤いぶくろ）に 入れて、しっかり しばってください。
Examples of Burnable Garbage: もえるごみの例（れい）
- Kitchen waste: leftovers, vegetable scraps, eggshells →Drain excess water before throwing out.
- Plastic items mixed with other materials (e.g. pens, toothbrushes, food trays that can’t be rinsed)
- Cooking oil → Soak in paper or cloth, or solidify with coagulant before disposal.
- Clothes, diapers → Remove any metal parts or excessive dirt before throwing away.
- Paper scraps: wrapping paper, tissue paper, small paper items → If stained with food or oil, they go in the burnable.
- Small garden branches or cuttings → Must be cut to 50 cm or less in length.
- Rubber and leather items: shoes, gloves, bags, belts → Must be placed inside the burnable trash bag or a container with a lid.
Moreover, dispose of all items in an official burnable bag or a container with a lid.
- キッチンのごみ（たべのこし、やさいのかわ、たまごのから）→ みずをよくきってからすててください。
- ほかのものとまざったプラスチック（ペン、はブラシ、きたないトレーなど）
- あぶら（こめあぶらなど）→ かみやふきんにしみこませて、またはかたまりにしてからすてます。
- 服（ふく）、オムツ（おむつ） → きたないぶぶんや金属（きんぞく）をとってからすてます。
- かみ（プレゼントのかみ、ティッシュ、こまかいかみ）→ たべものやあぶらがついたら、もえるごみになります。
- えだ や くさ（にわの そうじの ごみ）→ ながさを 50センチ以下（いか）に してください。
- ゴム・かわせいの もの（くつ、てぶくろ、かばん、ベルト）→ ごみぶくろに入れてください。ふたつきのゴミばこもOK です。
3.2 Non-Burnable Garbage 不燃ごみ
This category includes items that cannot be burned, require special handling and are usually collected twice a month. These should be placed in a transparent bag or a bin with a lid.
Examples of Non-Burnable Garbage:
- Metal items: pots, scissors, spoons, clocks, lighters, kitchen knives, spoons, umbrellas, steel cans
- Ceramics and glass: cups, ashtrays, broken dishes, cosmetic bottles, mirrors, broken cups or bowls
- Small home appliances: hair dryers, toasters, electric kettles
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- Mercury-containing items: thermometers, blood pressure meters
- Small household electronics: electric kettles, toasters, mixers, coffee machines
How to Dispose:
Wrap broken or sharp objects (like broken glass or tools) in thick paper or cardboard and label the outside as 「キケン」(Dangerous).
→ This protects sanitation workers from injury.Place all metal, ceramic, and glass waste in a transparent plastic bag or covered container.
Fluorescent bulbs should be kept in their original boxes or wrapped in thick paper/cardboard.
Items with mercury (like thermometers or blood pressure meters) must be placed in a transparent plastic bag and sealed well to prevent leaks.
Used lighters should be emptied as much as possible and thrown away in a separate bag.
このカテゴリには燃やせず、特別な取り扱いが必要なアイテムが含まれており、通常は月に二回回収されます。これらは透明の袋または蓋のある容器に入れてください。

すてかた：
われたガラスやナイフなど、するどいものはあついかみやダンボールでつつみます。- そのそとに 「キケン」 とかいてください。
- → そうじの人のけがをふせぐためです。
けいこうとうは、もとのはこにいれるか、あついかみでつつんでください。
水銀（すいぎん）がはいっているもの（たいおんけいなど）は、とうめいな ふくろに入れて、もれないようにしっかりしめてください。つかったライターは、できるだけガスをぬいてから、べつのふくろにいれてください。
3.3 Recyclable Garbage 資源ごみ
Recyclable items are collected separately and must be cleaned and sorted by category. Most items need to be rinsed and sorted into the correct type: paper, plastics, PET bottles, cans, bottles, and special items like batteries or gas cans. They are usually collected once a week.
しげんごみ（リサイクル できる ごみ）は、べつべつにあつめられます。
ごみをすてるまえに、きれいにあらって、しゅるいにわけなければなりません。
たとえば：かみ、プラスチック、ペットボトル、かん、びん、でんち、ガスかん など。
たいてい、1週間（1しゅうかん） に 1かい あつめられます。
3.3.1 Recyclable Paper (しげんペーパー)
- Newspapers & Cardboard → Fold neatly and tie with a string
- Magazines, books, flyers, paper boxes → Sort by type
- Miscellaneous paper (envelopes, packaging) → Put in a paper bag for disposal
しんぶん や ダンボール → きちんと たたんで、ひも で しばってください。
ざっし、ほん、チラシ、かみ の はこ → しゅるいごとにわけてください。
いろいろ な かみ（ふうとう、つつみ がみ など） → かみぶくろ に 入れてください。
3.3.2. Recyclable Plastic (リサイクルプラスチック)
Plastic items under 30 cm in size and made of 100% plastic, such as:
- Packaging & containers: trays, cups, bottles (not PET), film wrap
- Plastic goods: hangers, toy blocks, rulers, toothbrushes
- Styrofoam is also accepted
Do not mix items that are too hard, thick, or large (over 30 cm).
- パッケージ や いれもの：トレー、カップ、びん（ペットボトル では ありません）、ラップ
- プラスチック の もの：ハンガー、おもちゃ の ブロック、じょうぎ、はブラシ
- 発泡スチロール（はっぽうスチロール） も OK です。
3.3.3. PET Bottles (ペットボトル)
- Remove caps and labels → put them with plastic recyclables.
- Rinse the bottles before throwing them away
Do not mix PET bottles with other plastic bottles
- PET bottles will have the symbol ♻️PET
→ プラスチック ごみ として すててください。
- ペットボトル は、すてる まえに あらって ください。
- ペットボトル と その ほか の プラスチックボトル は まぜないで ください。
- ペットボトル には、「♻️PET」マーク が あります。
- この マーク を かくにん してください。
Glass bottles used for drinks, cosmetics, or medicine
→Lightly rinse all bottles before putting them in the designated bag
すてるまえに、かるくあらってください。
3.3.5. Cans (かん)
Aluminium and steel cans for drinks or food
→ Rinse before disposal. Do not crush or flatten.- かんは、のみものやたべものにつかわれているアルミかんやスチールかんです。
- すてるまえに、かるくあらってください。
- つぶさないで ください。かん の かたち のまま すててください。
- Spray cans, cassette gas cylinders → Make sure they are empty
- Batteries → Tape both ends (positive and negative) before disposal
- Medical waste (e.g., syringes) must be returned to the pharmacy.
- Use the correct bags — either official recyclable bags or transparent ones, depending on your city’s rules.
- Make sure all items are clean and dry before throwing them away. Dirty recyclables may not be collected.
- Always sort your trash by type: paper, plastics, cans, bottles, etc.
- Do not mix hazardous items like batteries, lighters, or gas canisters with regular recyclables. They can cause accidents.

リサイクル ごみ の ルール
リサイクル ごみ を すてる とき、たいせつな ルール が あります：
まち の ルール に あった せいしき な ぶくろ や とうめい な ぶくろ を つかってください。
ごみ は、あらって、かわかして から すててください。
よごれている ごみ は、あつめて もらえない こと が あります。ごみ は、しゅるい ごと に わけてください。たとえば：かみ、プラスチック、かん、びん など。
きけんな もの（でんち、ライター、ガスボンベ） は、ほか の ごみ と まぜないで ください。
→ きけん で、じこ に なる かのうせい が あります。
3.4 Oversized Garbage 粗大ごみ
- Furniture: chairs, sofas, tables, shelves
- Large home appliances: electric fans, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners
- Bicycles, futons, and suitcases
- 30 cm × 30 cm × 30 cm → Even if the item is broken apart or disassembled, it still counts as oversized
3.4.1 Steps to Dispose of Oversized Garbage
Step 1: Apply in Advance
Apply online (24 hours) at: https://www.shinjuku-sodai.comOr call 03-5304-8080 (Mon–Sat, 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
You’ll need to report the item type, size, and quantity
Step 2: Purchase a Disposal Ticket
Buy a "Large-Sized Waste Disposal Ticket" (粗大ごみ処理券) at convenience stores, supermarkets, or ward offices.Shinjuku uses:
A-ticket (200 yen)B-ticket (300 yen)
- Stickers must match the fee for your item (staff will tell you which to use)
Step 3: Place and Label
- On the collection day, place your item outside by 8:00 AM
- Attach the disposal ticket clearly to the item
Write your name or reservation number on the sticker
Refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines (covered under the Home Appliance Recycling Law)
Tires, pianos, safes, fire extinguishers, and concrete blocks
Clothes dryers, personal computers, etc.
→ These must be disposed of via special programs or recycling centres.
こわれていても、バラバラ に しても、大きさがおおきければそだいごみ です。

- ひきとりの日、朝8時までにごみをそとに出します
- ごみ に、チケットをはってください
- チケットに、名前 や予約番号（よやくばんごう）を書きます
つぎ の もの は、そだいごみ に 出せません：
冷蔵庫（れいぞうこ）、エアコン、せんたくき（家電リサイクル法 の もの）
タイヤ、ピアノ、金庫（きんこ）、しょうかき、コンクリートブロック
乾燥機（かんそうき）、パソコン など
→ とくべつな方法（ほうほう）ですてます。リサイクルセンター に もちこみ が ひつようです。
