Welcome to Clean'O'kubo! Based in Tokyo, Japan, we are a passionate team dedicated to making waste management in the vibrant Shin-Okubo area of Shinjuku City clear and accessible for everyone. 
クリーン・オークボへようこそ！わたしたちは、東京、日本にいます。新宿区（しんじゅくく）のしんおおくぼは、たくさんの人でにぎやかなまちです。そこで、ごみのだしかたをみんなにとってわかりやすくするために、かつどうしているチームです。

1. Our project's origin | プロジェクトがはじまったわけ

The "Clean'O'kubo" project was born from a common challenge faced by many foreign residents in Japan. In their first days living here, two foreign students, who would later become part of this team, found themselves struggling with Japan's very specific garbage separation and collection process. Official information was often difficult to understand, not being presented in either easy Japanese or clear English. This personal experience highlighted a significant need for more accessible guidance, especially in areas like Shin-Okubo, which is home to many international residents.

クリーン・オークボプロジェクトは、日本にすむたくさんの外国人（がいこくじん）が直面（ちょくめん）するこまりごとから始まりました。このチームの学生2人は、日本に来てすぐ、ごみの分け方や出し方のルールが難しいと感じました。役所（やくしょ）の情報（じょうほう）は、やさしい日本語（にほんご）やわかりやすい英語（えいご）ではなかったため、理解（りかい）するのが大変（たいへん）でした。この経験（けいけん）から、「もっとわかりやすい情報（じょうほう）がひつようだ」と思い、とくにたくさんの外国人（がいこくじん）がすむ新大久保（しんおおくぼ）のために、このプロジェクトを始めました。

2. Our Objectives | 私たちのもくひょう

Our main objective with "Clean'O'kubo" is to contribute to the cleanliness of the Shin-Okubo area. How? By providing a clear, simple explanation of Shinjuku City's garbage disposal system—covering separation, collection dates, and proper wrapping—on a free and easy-to-access online resource. The name "Clean'O'kubo" combines "Clean" for a clean environment and "'O'kubo" for Shin-Okubo. This project was developed and realized as part of the "Social Innovation in Global Asia" course during the Spring 2025 semester.

クリーン・オークボの目標（もくひょう）は、新大久保（しんおおくぼ）のまちをきれいにすることです。 わたしたちは、新宿区（しんじゅくく）のごみのだしかたのルール（わけかた、あつめる日、つつみかたなど）を、むりょうでだれでもかんたんにみられるウェブサイトで、わかりやすくせつめいします。 「Clean'O'kubo」という名前は、「きれいなかんきょうのClean（クリーン）」と「新大久保（しんおおくぼ）の'O'kubo（オクボ）」をあわせたものです。 このプロジェクトは、2025年の春（はる）、「Social Innovation in Global Asia」という授業（じゅぎょう）でつくられました。

3. Our Team | わたしたちのチーム

 "Clean'O'kubo" is a collaborative effort by three dedicated students from different backgrounds:
クリーン・オークボは、いろいろな国（くに）からきた3人のがくせいが、きょうりょくしてつくっています。

Abdou Rachad MOUSSA (アブドゥー）

 a third-year student at the School of Social Sciences/TAISI, from Benin. His interest in this topic comes from his experience with garbage separation, which, in his early days in Japan, used to be a really intriguing question.
ベナンからきた大学3年生です。TAISIというプログラムで社会科学（しゃかいかがく）を勉強しています。 ゴミの問題（もんだい）に興味（きょうみ）があるのは、日本に来たばかりのとき、わたしにとって、ごみをどう分けるか、とてもむずかしい問題（もんだい）だったからです。

Cherry (チェリー)

I'm Pattaraporn Sripanakul, a third-year exchange student at the School of Commerce, from Thailand. Living in Japan, I’ve learned that garbage separation is important, but not always easy to understand. I joined this project to help make the rules clearer for other international residents and to keep Shin-Okubo clean.

わたしはタイから来た、早稲田大学商学部の交換留学生（こうかんりゅうがくせい）、パッタラポーン・スィーパナクールです。日本に来て、ごみをわけることは大切だけど、わかりにくいとおもいました。このプロジェクトに参加して、ほかの外国人（がいこくじん）の人たちにも、ごみのルールをもっとわかりやすくしたいと思います。新大久保（しんおおくぼ）をきれいにしたいです。

 

Taka (たか)

I’m Taka, a first-year university student studying social sciences. I often come to Shin-Okubo, and I’m involved in this activity because I hope to help solve the area’s waste problem and make it a better place.

大学1年生で社会科学（しゃかいかがく）を勉強（べんきょう）しているたかです。わたしはいつも新大久保（しんおおくぼ）によくくるのですが、この場所（ばしょ）のごみ問題（もんだい）が解決（かいけつ）してよりよいまちになればとおもってこの活動（かつどう）をしています。

Together, we bring diverse perspectives and a shared commitment to making Shin-Okubo a cleaner and more welcoming place for everyone.

わたしたちは、それぞれちがうかんがえかたをもっていますが、新大久保（しんおおくぼ）をよりきれいにして、みんながすごしやすい場所（ばしょ）にしたいとおもっています。
